Storylines involving faith and religion often follow familiar patterns in Nollywood movies. They depict clergies in conflict with witches, wayward pastors exploiting their congregations, or other scenarios that resonate visually with the local audience. However, Breath of Life, a Prime Video original written and directed by BB Sasore and produced by Eku Edewor, takes a refreshing trajectory in exploring faith. Moreover, the result is a visually stunning film with award-worthy performances from Wale Ojo, Chimezie Imo, and Genoveva Umeh, whose characters intersect to weave a captivating story from beginning to end.

The Storyline

Released on Prime Video on November 15 by Nemsia Films, co-founded by Derin Adeyokunnu, the movie is narrated by Elijah. It follows Timi, who has lost his sense of purpose until meeting Elijah, who transforms his life and destiny. Set in the 1950s, the film showcases the remarkable life of young Timi (played by Ademola Adedoyin), who speaks 16 languages, four of which are extinct. Also, his intellectual prowess and accomplishments are extraordinary, making him the first African clergyman in the Great Church of England. After returning to his Nigerian village as a wealthy clergyman, Timi’s seemingly perfect life shatters due to tragic events instigated by a local thug, leading to a dramatic transformation in his character.

However, as Timi evolves into an older man (portrayed by Wale Ojo) in the 1980s, Ojo takes on his most challenging role to date. He brings depth to the character’s emotional turmoil as he navigates the aftermath of his family’s murder. Moreover, the detailed props and settings enhance the authenticity of Timi’s isolated existence. Chimezie Imo’s portrayal of Elijah, a young man with a severe lung disease, is compelling. His interactions with Timi, filled with tension and eventual bonding, add layers to the narrative. Anna, the nurse and Elijah’s love interest, brings a refreshing balance to the story, challenging both Elijah and Timi in meaningful ways. The emotional highs and lows, from Timi’s rediscovery of faith to Elijah’s heartfelt plea for love, make Breath of Life an exceptional Nollywood film that is highly recommended.
