Jennifer Pan, subject of the new Netflix true crime documentary, “What Jennifer Did,” was found guilty in 2014 of conspiring to kill her parents. Currently serving a life sentence, she awaits a possible retrial on her first-degree murder charge.

The documentary delves into Pan’s life, portraying her as a Canadian woman who allegedly hired hitmen to kill her parents when she was only 24 years old. The incident occurred in 2010, with hitmen entering her home, resulting in her mother’s death and severe injuries to her father. Initially portrayed as a victim, Pan’s involvement came to light through police interrogations.

Pan’s upbringing, detailed in a 2015 Toronto Life article by journalist Karen K. Ho, sheds light on the circumstances leading to the crime. Immigrant parents, strict control, and pressure to excel academically pushed Pan to drastic measures. Forbidden from seeing her boyfriend, Daniel Wong, she conspired with him to hire hitmen.

The trial, spanning 10 months, culminated in Pan’s conviction for first-degree murder and attempted murder. She, along with Wong and the hitmen, received life sentences. Despite the conviction, Pan’s family still grapples with the aftermath, seeking closure and understanding.

In a surprising turn of events, the Ontario Appeal Court ordered a retrial in May 2023, citing limitations in the original trial. The Crown’s subsequent appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada adds another layer of uncertainty to Pan’s fate.

Despite the legal battles and evidence presented in “What Jennifer Did,” Pan maintains her innocence, leaving her future and the truth behind her actions in question.
