Inside the contentious legal battle over Michael Jackson’s vast $2 billion estate, Katherine Jackson, the family matriarch, finds herself entangled in a complex dispute with her grandson Bigi (formerly Blanket). The heart of the conflict lies in whether the estate should cover Katherine’s substantial legal expenses.

During a recent courtroom session in Los Angeles, held on Friday, March 22, Katherine Jackson faced yet another legal hurdle concerning her late son’s estate while entangled in a complex dispute. In addition to her ongoing appeal against a previous court ruling, she now finds herself at odds with Bigi over the funding of her legal representation.

The co-executors of Michael Jackson’s estate, attorney John Branca and A&R executive John McClain, secured a favorable ruling in probate court last year, enabling them to proceed with a reported $600 million sale of half of Jackson’s music catalog to Sony. Despite Katherine’s opposition, citing concerns over the deal’s execution, the executors pressed forward, asserting the transaction’s benefits to the estate and its beneficiaries.

Judge Mitchell L. Beckloff, who has presided over various Jackson-related rulings for over 15 years, expressed his hope for an amicable resolution during the recent hearing. However, with no agreement reached, a new judge will take over the case.

The estate’s recent appellate brief highlighted their efforts to leverage the booming asset market, which propelled the estate’s value to over $2 billion since Michael Jackson’s passing. Acknowledging the estate’s financial turnaround, attorney Jonathan Steinsapir expressed gratitude to the court for its guidance over the years.

Despite the estate’s success, Katherine remains steadfast in her objections, particularly regarding the sale of Jackson’s music assets. She contends that the executors failed to exercise due diligence, potentially undervaluing the assets, and depriving the estate of a premium payment.

In December, Katherine filed motions seeking financial coverage for her legal expenses, a move contested by Bigi, who deems it unfair for him and his siblings to bear the burden of her legal battles. Although Bigi recognizes the necessity of covering reasonable attorney fees, he questions the exorbitant costs incurred during the trial.

Tensions escalated further when Jackson’s nephew, Taj Jackson, voiced support for Katherine on social media, warning against disparaging remarks aimed at his grandmother.

Despite initial opposition, Bigi ultimately accepted the court-approved transaction with Sony, aligning with his siblings’ decision. However, Katherine persists in her appeal, a move criticized by the estate as detrimental to the heirs’ interests.

As the legal saga unfolds, Katherine’s attorney, Adam Pines, continues to advocate for the estate’s coverage of her legal fees, citing the estate’s substantial distributions and expenditures.

Despite the arguments presented, Judge Beckloff remains constrained by procedural hurdles, unable to render a decisive judgment. The next court hearing is scheduled for May 30, 2024, as the saga surrounding Michael Jackson’s estate shows no signs of resolution.
