Government Appeals to NLC and TUC, Urges Against Nationwide Strike
In a bid to prevent a nationwide strike, the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government has implored the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to reconsider their decision. Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, emphasized that it was not in the government’s interest for labor unions to embark on strike actions.
The organized labor had recently issued a 14-day ultimatum to the federal government, citing the prevailing hardships faced by Nigerians. However, in response to the ultimatum, Minister Mohammed Idris assured the unions that the government would uphold its promises and honor agreements made with the workers.
Speaking on behalf of the government, Minister Mohammed Idris urged the labor unions to engage in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to strikes. He emphasized the government’s willingness to address any concerns or grievances raised by the unions, stating that an amicable resolution could be achieved through discussions.
“We appeal to labor to always find common ground with the government. It is not in the government’s interest for labor unions to continue resorting to strikes,” Minister Idris stated. “The government is committed to keeping its promises. If there are any concerns that the NLC and TUC wish to address, we encourage them to engage in dialogue with the government, as we are ready to listen and find solutions to any outstanding issues.”
The government’s appeal comes as a response to the growing tension between labor unions and the government over various economic and welfare matters. The Federal Government remains committed to fostering a harmonious relationship with the labor unions while prioritizing the well-being of Nigerian citizens.
As the deadline for the ultimatum approaches, the nation eagerly awaits the unions’ response and hopes for a mutually beneficial resolution that will alleviate the hardships faced by the Nigerian populace.
