Islamic Police Arrest 11
In a recent development in Nigeria’s northern state of Kano, the Islamic police, known as Hisbah, have apprehended 11 Muslims for breaking their fast during the holy month of Ramadan. Kano, with a predominantly Muslim population, operates under a dual legal system where Sharia (Islamic law) coexists with secular law.

Every year during Ramadan, Hisbah conducts searches in eateries and markets as part of their enforcement efforts. On Tuesday, they detained 11 individuals, including a female groundnut seller who was found consuming the very product she sold. The authorities were alerted to this violation by vigilant citizens.

Lawal Fagge, a spokesperson for Hisbah, informed the BBC, “The arrested individuals consist of one lady who sells groundnuts, which she was consuming, and ten men who were apprehended in various parts of the city, particularly in close proximity to bustling markets.”

Fagge further explained that the search operations would continue, emphasizing that non-Muslims need not be concerned about this enforcement activity.

Following their detention, Hisbah has released the individuals after they swore an oath, pledging not to miss their fast again.

Islamic police, also known as Hisbah, refers to law enforcement agencies or units that operate in some predominantly Muslim countries or regions. Their primary responsibility is to enforce Islamic law, or Sharia, in areas such as public morality, religious observance, and social norms. Islamic police may have the authority to monitor and regulate activities such as dress codes, alcohol consumption, gambling, and adherence to religious practices.

The scope and powers of Islamic police can vary depending on the country and its legal framework. In some regions, they may operate alongside secular law enforcement agencies, while in others, they may have exclusive jurisdiction in matters related to Islamic law. Their activities can range from conducting patrols, inspections, and searches to making arrests and imposing punishments based on Islamic legal principles.

It’s important to note that the specific practices and policies of Islamic police can vary widely across different countries and regions. The existence and functions of Islamic police are often influenced by the cultural, religious, and legal traditions of the particular jurisdiction in which they operate.
