Hisbah Warns Non-Muslims in Kano Against Public Eating During Ramadan

Ramadan… Islamic Police, Hisbah, has issued a warning to non-Muslim residents of Kano State, Nigeria, against eating in public places during the holy month of Ramadan. The Director-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board Department of Public Enlightenment, Abba Sai’Idu, emphasized that it is illegal for non-Muslims, including Christians, to eat openly or engage in any activity that could undermine the Islamic religion or tempt those who are fasting.

To enforce this directive, the Hisbah enforcement team has increased patrols across the city of Kano to identify and apprehend any Muslims found participating in practices that are not in accordance with Islamic culture during Ramadan.

Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), made the announcement of the commencement of fasting in the holy month of Ramadan. Muslims are expected to abstain from eating, drinking, engaging in sexual activities, and smoking during daylight hours as prescribed by the Holy Quran.

This is not the first time the Hisbah Board has taken action against individuals who violated the rules of Ramadan. In 2021, the Board arrested eight women and three men for eating during the fasting period in raids conducted in the Tudun Murtala area of Nassarawa Local Government and the Sharada area of Kano Municipal. However, those arrested denied the accusations, claiming they had valid reasons for their actions.

The warning from the Hisbah Board serves as a reminder to non-Muslim residents in Kano State to be respectful of the religious practices and sensitivities of the Muslim population during Ramadan. It is advisable for non-Muslims to observe discretion and avoid consuming food or engaging in activities that may offend or tempt those who are fasting.
