Ric Hassani Sounds Alarm on Declining Quality of Nigerian Hit Songs
Nigerian singer-songwriter Ric Hassani shared his insights on the quality of Nigerian hit songs. Speaking during an interview with Rubbin’ Minds on Channels TV, he expressed concern over the downward trend in the standard of Nigerian music.
Hassani attributed this decline to the lowered barrier to entry into the industry, noting that an influx of newcomers has led to a dilution of musical standards. “Our guys are top 10 and I feel because of that the quality of music might start dropping because now more people want to get in,” he remarked. In contrast to the past, where hit songs were characterized by serious musical endeavors, he lamented that many current hits fail to meet the mark of excellence.
Drawing attention to the proliferation of similar Amapiano-styled productions, Hassani echoed sentiments expressed by others regarding the lack of innovation and originality in contemporary releases. He suggested that the industry’s continued success may have fostered complacency among artists, resulting in a decline in artistic integrity.
Moreover, Hassani addressed the phenomenon of artists seeking to distance themselves from the Afrobeats label, which serves as the overarching descriptor for Nigerian pop music. While he personally has never felt constrained by the Afrobeats tag, he acknowledged that some artists may feel confined by its associations, leading them to seek alternative categorizations.
In essence, his remarks as Ric Hassani shared his insights on the quality of Nigerian hit songs, underscore the need for a renewed emphasis on creativity and musical excellence within the Nigerian music industry, as well as a reevaluation of the factors influencing its trajectory.
His views are actually right and correct. They should continue putting there best, the Nigeria music industry is dominanting the world.
