The federal government, led by President Bola Tinubu, is planning to propose a new minimum wage for the organised sector. Sources within the government have revealed that the proposed range is between N150,000 and N200,000. This comes after the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) submitted a joint proposal of N615,000 as the new minimum wage.

In a bid to discuss and agree on the government’s position, a meeting has been scheduled between the federal government and the leadership of organised labour. The meeting, set to take place at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), will include government representatives from the tripartite committee on the new minimum wage.

The NLC and TUC have advocated for a living wage that can support workers in the face of rising living costs. While the NLC proposed N794,000 as the minimum wage, the TUC suggested N447,000. However, the unions jointly submitted a proposal of N615,000 to the government, citing the current economic challenges. According to a reliable source within the SGF office, the federal government is likely to consider an amount within the range of N150,000 to N200,000, which will be presented for further negotiation to the committee.

Meanwhile, demands for a new minimum wage vary across states. Workers in Taraba and Gombe states are requesting a minimum wage of N60,000, while workers in the southwest are demanding N794,000. These demands are being presented by workers from different geopolitical zones to the presidential tripartite committee on the national minimum wage.

In summary, the federal government, under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, is proposing a new minimum wage ranging from N150,000 to N200,000 for the organised sector. A meeting has been arranged between the government and organised labour to discuss the proposal. The NLC and TUC have jointly proposed N615,000 as the new minimum wage, while demanding a living wage to address the rising cost of living. Different states have varying demands for the minimum wage, with workers in Taraba and Gombe requesting N60,000 and those in the southwest demanding N794,000.
