Good Governance and Financial Management in tertiary institutions: A picture of President Tinubu speaking

President Bola Tinubu’s call for adherence to Federal Government guidelines regarding good governance and financial management in tertiary institutions, post their removal from the Integrated Personnel Payment System (IPPIS), marks a pivotal moment in Nigerian higher education. This directive, stemming from the Federal Executive Council’s decision last December to withdraw Federal Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education from IPPIS, underscores the government’s commitment to institutional integrity.

Tinubu emphasized these imperatives during the 13th convocation ceremony of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), where the investiture of the new Chancellor, Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku’ Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, also took place. With a total of 22,175 students receiving various degree certificates, including six Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) recipients and 22 students graduating with First Class honors, the event celebrated academic excellence and societal contributions.

Furthermore, the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees upon two notable individuals, Founder of Innoson Motors, Innocent Chukwuma, and Hajia Hafsatu Abdulwaheed, further underscored the recognition of outstanding achievements and contributions to society.

Representing President Tinubu, Joel Saliu, the Deputy Executive Secretary, Academics at the National Universities Commission, reiterated the importance of implementing the government’s guidelines to ensure transparency and efficiency in financial management across tertiary institutions. This directive aligns with Tinubu’s broader vision to promote open and distance learning approaches, evidenced by the licensing of four private open universities alongside NOUN, aimed at enhancing educational accessibility and affordability.

Meanwhile, Prof Olufemi Peters, Vice Chancellor of NOUN, highlighted the university’s remarkable growth trajectory from its inception in 2003, with 1,230 students, to its current enrollment of 170,000 active students in 2024, supported by over 120 study centers nationwide. Peters encouraged graduates to pursue further education, underscoring NOUN’s commitment to facilitating academic aspirations.

The investiture of the new Chancellor, Oba of Benin, signaled a renewed focus on excellence, innovation, and inclusivity in NOUN’s strategic direction. His Royal Majesty expressed his determination to leverage his position to elevate the institution’s stature, emphasizing the transformative potential of education in shaping society.

As NOUN embarks on this new chapter under the leadership of its Chancellor, the commitment to upholding principles of integrity, scholarship, and service remains paramount. With a clear trajectory towards advancement and progress, NOUN stands poised to continue its legacy as a beacon of hope and opportunity in Nigeria’s higher education landscape.
